FAQ & Tips

Asking a question
  1. What questions can I ask?
You can ask any question that can be answered with words or numbers. And you can edit your question's parameters at any time as long as it is not “reserved.” That is, as long as it is not being worked on by a Researcher, you can change the question's price or its category. Most askers are looking for a specific piece of information like, "How much wheat was imported by China last year?" or "Why did Ford’s Edsel fail?". Our Researchers are not necessarily experts in the field related to your question, but they are experts in locating hard to find information on the web. If the answer to your question is online, chances are pretty good they'll find it. Keep in mind that YouAskUs.com is not a substitute for professional advice or service, nor will we knowingly provide answers to assist in illegal activities. We reserve the right to delete questions on a case-by-case basis if they do not comply with our editorial policy and guidelines for "Proper Use," as specified in our Terms of Service.

YouAskUs.com discourages and may remove questions that:

    • request private information about individuals
    • want assistance in conducting illegal activities
    • are meant to sell or advertise products
    • refer or relate to adult content
    • seek specific information about YouAskUs.com (See Contact Us)

  2. How do I clarify my own question?
You may decide that your question is not clear. We do not provide for modifying the original text of your question, but you can clarify your question with a Question Clarification posting. To clarify your question, first log in and then click on the "My Questions" tab on your account page. Link to the question you wish to clarify and click the "Clarify Question" button just above your question, enter the new information in the box provided and click the "Post Clarification" button once you have finished. If you want to discard your clarification before posting it, click the "Cancel Clarification" button.

Sometimes a Researcher will issue a Request for Question Clarification on your question. When you log in, click the "My Questions" tab. Select the question you wish to clarify and follow the procedure as described above to post your clarification.

  3. Do you answer medical, financial, or legal questions?
We will provide background information and links to sources for questions of a professional nature, but YouAskUs.com does not provide professional advice and counsel. If you have a question of this nature, we strongly recommend you consult a professional.
  4. What are “Reserved” questions?
Questions that Researchers are currently answering are “reserved” to ensure that only one Researcher works on them at a time. Right now, questions are reserved for eight hours unless the question price is $100 or more, in which case the question is reserved for twelve (12) hours. During this period, no other Researcher can answer the reserved question. Once the Researcher responds to the question, its status changes from "reserved" to "answered." If the Researcher does not answer the question in the reserved time period, then the question's status reverts to "unanswered" and another Researcher can choose to answer it.
  5. Will YouAskUs.com answer my homework questions?
It is not always possible for YouAskUs.com to tell when a question posted to the site is a "homework" question. In general, we recommend that you use YouAskUs.com as a tool to assist you with your homework rather than as a substitute for you doing your own homework. Please note that we reserve the right to remove questions from the site for any reason, and questions that are clearly homework may be subject to deletion.

Pricing a question
  1. How much do answers cost?
There is a non-refundable service fee of $0.50 per question plus an additional 'price' you set for your question that reflects how much you're willing to pay for an answer. At present, that price can be as low as $5 or as high as $30. If you decide you are willing to pay more for an answer after setting your price, you can increase the amount any time your question is not 'reserved' (being actively worked on by a Researcher). You'll only be charged the price you set when and if your question is answered. However, there is a non-refundable service fee of $0.50 that is charged even if your question is not answered.
  2. How much should I pay for my question? What price should I set?
The more research required finding an answer and the faster you expect the answer the higher the price should be. YouAskUs.com shares the revenue with the Researcher except for the $.50 service fee. Setting a price too low to compensate for the time required may result in your question not receiving prompt attention. The more you are willing to pay, the more likely your question is to get answered quickly.
  3. Will I be charged for more than one answer?
No. You can only be charged for an "answer", and only one answer can be provided to a question. You will be charged the amount you specified when a Researcher posts an answer to your question.
  4. Is my credit card information safe?
We understand that making a purchase online involves a great deal of trust on your part. We take this trust very seriously, and make it our highest priority to ensure the security and confidentiality of the information you provide. YouAskUS.com uses industry-standard SSL (secure socket layer) technology to protect every interaction you have with the system. This protects your credit card and other personal information. Once we receive your information, we not only store it behind a firewall, but we also encrypt the sensitive credit card information. You will note the “padlock” icon at the bottom of the page; this is the internationally recognized symbol of a secure web site.

When credit cards are submitted through our secure online form, they are checked against the account information by our third-party credit card processor. If information submitted is invalid, the credit card will not be accepted.

The information you provide will only be used by us in an effort to serve you better. We don't share or sell your personal information. For more details please see our Privacy Policy.

YouAskUs.com Researchers
  1. Who will answer my question?
Your question will be answered by a Researcher. YouAskUs.com Researchers are experts at locating hard-to-find information on the web, and through other resources as well. Researchers must go through an application process that tests their research skills and the quality of their answers. YouAskUS.com also spot-checks their answers. If our editor sees a problem with an answer, steps will be taken to correct it.
  2. Are Researchers experts in their field?
All Researchers are tested to ensure that they are expert searchers with excellent communication skills. Some of them also have expertise in various fields. Your question may be answered by an expert in a particular field or by an expert searcher. Either way, if you are unsatisfied with your answer for any reason, you may apply for a refund by going to “Contacts” and citing your transaction number in your request.
  3. How does YouAskUs.com make sure Researchers provide high quality answers?
YouAskUs.com has a stringent process for screening Researchers before they're allowed to participate. Each applicant must successfully answer a number of test questions and Editors routinely check the answers to ensure continued high quality.
  4. How do I sign up to become a Researcher?
Send an expression of interest email via Contact Us and include a resume of your education and work history as well as a description of your expertise in an area unrelated to your work history that might be useful for us to know, e.g. “I am familiar with the inner workings of the government of Monrovia”.

Answers to your questions
  1. How will I know when my question has been answered?
You will be sent an email that a Researcher has answered your question. If you prefer not to receive email, you can set this as a preference in your profile when you first open an account, or go to "My Account" and change your preferences on the tab "My Profile". In which case your answer will be mailed to you for an additional charge of $2.00.
  2. What if a question doesn't have a clear answer?
Some questions simply don't have clear, straightforward answers that can be answered through an online search or through another reference source (e.g. "Which is prettier - blue or green?"). In such cases, Researchers will attempt to provide links to useful background information on the question.
  3. The Researcher only partially answered my question. How do I get further clarification?
You have the option to request a clarification once you receive your answer from a Researcher. To request further clarification, log in and go to "My Account". When you see the list of questions you have asked, click on the question with the answer you wish to clarify. Once you have clicked on the question, look at the Answer section and click on the "Request Answer Clarification" button. Then enter the clarification you desire into the box. The Researcher will be alerted that a clarification has been requested.
  4. What if I don't like my answer? Can I get a refund?
If you are not fully satisfied with your answer, the first step is to request a clarification of your answer from the original Researcher. If you are still dissatisfied after clarification, you can request your question be re-posted once again. If you receive a second answer and are still not satisfied, you may apply for a full refund, less the non-refundable $0.50 listing fee, using our refund request form. If you want a refund, you'll be asked to explain why you were unsatisfied with your answer, and this information, along with the question and returned answer, will be sent to the Researcher. Full refunds for all reasonable requests are available for up to 30 days after answers are posted. Be sure to include your question ID number.

Tips
  1. How to get a better answer to your question?
    1. Subject

Summarize in a few words what your question is about. This will help Researchers select the questions they want to answer. Sometimes your question is short enough to be repeated in the subject line. If you are having trouble writing your subject line, put down a few key words so that researchers will at least know the general direction of your question.

Examples: "whale watching", "History of Green Bay Packers”, "official languages of Switzerland"

    2. Question

Many will wonder how to phrase a question so that they get a good answer. Here are some tips from our Researchers.

      1. Certain questions are not recommended. We discourage, and may remove, questions that: Contain your personal contact information (email, phone number, full name); Request private information about individuals; Want assistance in conducting illegal activities; Are meant to sell or advertise products; Refer or relate to adult content; Seek specific information about YouAskUs.com (see “Contacts” instead)
      2. Multi-part questions create problems: Multi-part questions often do not get answered because they can be difficult to answer well. If you have a complex, multi-part question, you will typically get better results by posting parts of the question separately, so that Researchers can choose to answer the parts of the question they find most interesting. This way, too, you can benefit from the expertise of multiple Researchers rather than relying on only one.
      3. Tell us what you already know: When writing your question, please include a summary of any information that you may already have about your question including specific links if they are pertinent or have proven to be dead-ends. This will help Researchers understand where to begin their research for you.
      4. Indicate the kind of answer you want. Let the Researchers know what will and won't be a good answer for your question. For example, "I want names of record stores in Chicago. I don't want names of record stores in the suburbs of Chicago, only in the city itself." Or, "I want the names of all the recent American Presidents and their wives. By recent, I mean from 1960 on. I don't want anyone from before 1960."
      5. Provide detail. To streamline the process avoid having to provide additional information to Researchers AFTER you have posted the question via the clarification process, provide as much detail as possible upfront about your question. For example, if you are asking about a law in some state, provide the name of the state. Also, avoid ambiguity; e.g. “What is the President’s wife’s name?” what President of what country?

    3. Price

The price you set for your question should take into account the following factors:

How quickly you want an answer...
The higher the price you set for your question, the more likely a Researcher will begin work on your question quickly. Researchers earn a share of the price of the question when they post an answer to it.

      How complex the question is...
The more complex the question, the more time it requires for a Researcher to answer. A Researcher will only want to answer a complex question if he or she feels adequately compensated for the time expended. If you have a sense of how long it will take a Researcher to find an answer, you should take that into account. For example, if you know your question could take 3 hours to answer, you should price your question higher than you would if your question would take only 15 minutes to answer.

How valuable the information is to you...
Only you can determine the value of the information you're seeking. If it's important and urgent, you should price your question higher, because a Researcher is more likely to answer higher value questions quickly.

    4. Category

Choose a major category that best fits your question's overall character. Once you choose a major category, you will be prompted to choose a subcategory within it. If you're having trouble choosing a category, choose the one that's closest to your topic or could include your topic.

  2. Once Your Question Is Asked – What then?
    1. Edit your question content
You cannot edit the original text of your question, but you are able to 'clarify' your question at any time, even when it is reserved by a researcher. Clarifying your question is a good idea if you want to add new information to help the Researcher or if you think rephrasing your question will make it easier for the Researcher to answer. To clarify your question, go to "My Account" and select "My Unanswered Questions." Choose the question you wish to clarify. Select "Clarify Question" in the question field to open the clarification window. Click "Post Clarification" once you've completed adding your new information. You can also change the category that your question is under. To do that, click on the "Change Question Parameters" button.

    2. Change your question price
You can change your price at anytime as long as your question is not currently “reserved” and being answered by a Researcher. To change your question price, go to "My Account," select "My Unanswered Questions" and click on the question with the price you want to change. Then click on "Change Question Parameters" to modify the price.

    3. Get clarification on the answer to your question
If the answer you receive to your question is unclear for whatever reason, you can request a clarification at no additional charge. You should ask for a clarification if you feel the answer is incorrect or incomplete, or if you simply want more information on your subject. To request a clarification, go to your account page and select "My Answered Questions". Select the question you would like clarified. Click the "Clarify Answer" button to open the clarification window. Select "Post Clarification" when you are done typing.
