Question #
36

I am a software engineer, and I am currently considering designing a software package to provide reservations and management functions for pet kennels. I have had an interest in doing this project for several years, but have not had time or resources to take on such a project 'til now. When I first came up with the idea (approx. 5 yrs ago), there was only a limited # of software solutions out there, and the solutions that I researched were poor-quality. NOW, there is a popular package out there named 'Kennel Connection' that provides a good product, and they have intense marketing in place. My question is, assuming I could build a better product (although I couldn't promise anything x-times better), is there a "market" to introduce a new kennel management software package in this industry niche? How do I determine my probability of risk or failure? My cost to build this software will be $50000 - $75000, so I want to have a good idea of HOW I can  compete in this market and if it is a good idea. I am eager to proceed, but ONLY IF IT MAKES BUSINESS SENSE. Please note that I previously requested information on how to/where to find "marketing research help", someone who can perform a cost/benefit analysis for me for a reasonable fee (given that I am small-business, 1.5 employees), not quite the depth of information I was looking for. Please provide me with advice on the pet kennel software market, and/or lead me to professional resources that can help me without huge corporate fees ... Thank you in advance!
